High Interest of Foreigners in Construction Sector

For the first half of this year, direct foreign investment in the construction sector amounted $1.254 billion, and the rent and real estate activities sector received direct investment of $ 184 million.

According to the newsletter, "The data on direct international investment" of the Ministry of economy, investment in the construction sector reached its peak in May, amounting to $1.115 billion, bringing the total direct international investment in the sector in the first six months as $1.254 billion.

During the same period of last year, direct foreign investment in the construction sector reached $153 million, and for the entire 2011 investment in the construction sector was equal to $307 million, in 2010 it amounted $209 million, in 2008 - $337 million, and for 2007 - $287 million.

And in the rental sector and real estate transactions in the first six months of 2012 the flow of direct international investment was registered as the amount of $184 million.

During the same period last year the figure was $49 million, for the entire 2011 - $217 million, in 2010 - $241 million, for 2009 - $210 million, in 2008 - $453 million, and in 2007 - $448 million.

Thus, for the period from January to June 2012 the inflow of direct foreign investment in the construction sector was increased by more than 8 times, compared to the same period last year, and almost 4 times it has increased in the sector of rental and real estate operations.

Most in Istanbul, Antalya and Mugla.

At the same time, for the first 6 months of this year in the construction sector 53 new companies with international capital were established, and inflow of foreign capital was made to 7 companies. Thus, the number of companies with foreign capital operating in the construction sector in Turkey has reached 2.850.

1.125 of them are operating in Istanbul, 651 in Antalya, 237  in Ankara, 208 in Mugla, and 128 in Izmir.

In the rental sector and real estate transactions in the first half of 2012 110 new companies and 3 branches with international capital were established, and in another 18 companies inflows of foreign capital were made. The number of companies with international capital in this sector has reached number of 4.897. 2.661 of these companies are in Istanbul, 840 are in Antalya, 493 are in Mugla, 323 are in Ankara, and 197 are Izmir.

On the other hand, these figures show that every 25 out of 100 companies with foreign capital operating in Turkey belong to the sectors of construction or leasing and real estate transactions, and that $21.58 of every $100 of direct international investment attracted to Turkey, are invested in the construction or the rental and real estate sectors.
